Breaching the Floodwall: Recreating the Natural Levee
New Orleans, Louisiana
Joint Venture: praxis3 + Lee Kean Architect
This entry for Architectural Records competition was based on the idea that
the next flood would always occur. With that in mind the base of the project
is given to parking and an open air farmers market. Town houses along the
street edge conceal a urban park three stories above grade. The park provides
access across the flood wall and train line to the river beyond. Above the
park is a long tower housing market-rate apartments with teak shutters so
that the tenants can control the temperature without necessarily needing to
use mechanical systems.
